In memory of
Pierre Besson
1963-1998

A  very good friend, a colleague,
The inventor of the Beaune Conferences

Pierre, who passed over on October 12, 1998 was an experimental physicist at DAPNIA-SED the detector division of "Direction des Sciences de la Matière" of CEA-SACLAY.

Pierre joined SACLAY in 1989 just after his thesis at LAPP Annecy. Pierre was one of the most promising experimentalist in our community. Despite his too short career, he had an impressive list of achievements. After his Thesis in the Bugey neutrino experiment, he initiated an R&D group in Saclay and work on CsI-based photosensive detectors for RICH. He also took an important part at the beginning of the BaBar project, in particular, taking successfully the responsability of the different CERN beam tests of the prototype of a new kind of detector named DIRC. Recently he shared his time between the preparation of the calibration of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter, the VAMOS project in GANIL and his responsibilities inside the "Service des Détecteurs " in Saclay.

Pierre was the promoter and the leader of the organization of the first Beaune conference in 1996 on the new developments in photodetection. His work made this first edition a success. A few months ago he launched the call for this new edition in 1999 and convinced us to work with him on the organizing committee.

Pierre's kind personality and leadership will be missed. We will do our best to make the Beaune conference in 1999 a conference he would have liked.

For all of us Pierre was first a nice and warm friend, and as such he will remain in our memories.
